Alpheus Medical, a Brain Tumor Investment Fund™ portfolio company, has opened enrollment in the Alpheus Butterfly trial (NCT07862647). The multicenter study is testing the company’s investigational PoMA™ therapy in people with newly diagnosed butterfly glioblastoma (GBM). Butterfly GBM crosses the corpus callosum into both hemispheres of the brain. Because of that, patients with it are often excluded from GBM trials that bar bilateral or multifocal disease. The trial is enrolling at Dent Neurologic Institute in Buffalo, New York. More U.S. sites are expected in the coming months.
PoMA (Porphyrin Metabolite Activation) therapy pairs an oral drug, 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA), with low-intensity defocused ultrasound delivered from outside the head. After patients take 5-ALA, a compound called protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) builds up mainly in tumor cells, and the ultrasound is designed to activate it there. In this study, ultrasound is applied to both hemispheres alongside standard of care. Treatment is outpatient, and the patient is awake for it. The trial will evaluate safety and clinical activity. Patients must enroll before they begin standard chemoradiation.
